Resolutions are difficult because they mean that something needs to change in order for it to improve. The part about change is hard enough to swallow but the thing that kills most people is ADMITTING that something needs improvement. Let’s address that issue right up front. If you are in a solo law firm – a private business that you own that helps people solve problems related to the law – and you do not make as much money as you’d like, then you need to improve. Why? Because the only reason to start a business is to make as much money as possible. Everybody needs money. There can be other noble reasons to go into business. But the main one is to make money. The sooner you come to grips with that fact the better off your law firm will be. Money cannot buy love but it can help you solve many problems. I meet many attorneys who feel guilty about making money. If you are one of these people, I give you permission to let go of that feeling. It is not only your right to make as much money as possible, it is your responsibility. You went to law school. You studied hard. You paid your dues. You have honed your craft. It is now time to reap the rewards. So why is this important enough to be the number one resolution? Viewing your law firm as a business serves as the foundation on which you will build your future success. If you really want to maximize the earning potential a solo law firm can provide, you need to be ready to make lots of money. Are you ready?
